Investment in digital innovation and adoption of creative market-driven thinking is key to unlock and accelerate digital sustainability solutions for the MS4 sector. Advanced technologies will lead the transition of the sector from ‘business as usual’ to a ‘digital water’ utility. Lessons learned from digital ag can help propel digital water forward and act synergistically to address nexus issues related to water pollution, water quality, and climate change resiliency.
NMSA, through support from the Chesapeake Bay Trust and EPA Region 3, released an in-depth report titled, “The Agriculture and MS4 Sectors: A Digital Revolution,” in June 2021 to explore these issues. While the report is national in scope, there is a specific focus on the Chesapeake Bay watershed in some key areas, such as nutrient and sediment reduction. The Coefficient Group provided input in areas critical to agriculture, digitalization, and energy issues with NMSA focusing on water quality, resiliency and smart stormwater technologies. This report presents information on cutting-edge digital innovations in both the ag and MS4 sectors and ways that these technologies can work complementarily and synergistically for the benefit of communities faced with ag-MS4 dynamics.
